1960's ALFRED BIRDSEY (British 1912-1996) Impressionist Bahamian Harbor Cityscape Watercolor Painting

The pre-eminent Bahamian water-colorist of the late twentieth century, Alfred Birdsey is known for his atmospheric landscapes of Hamilton, St. Georges and the surrounding bays of Bermuda. Of him in a 2012 tourist guide, Elbow Beach Cycles, it is written: "The paintings of Alfred Birdsey played an important part in changing the way Bermuda was seen abroad and became regular additions to many collections around the world. Alfred Birdsey is most known for his impressionistic representations of the island landscapes, harbours, boats, backstreets, seascapes, homes and bays. Some of his paintings also show an Asian influence." He also painted sailboat artwork used to promote the America's Cup when it is sailed from Newport, RI, USA to Bermuda. In Bermuda, his studio was in the back garden of his home in Rosecote in Paget from 1968 until his death in 1996. Alfred Birdsey stood alone for most of the second half of the 20th century as the only modernist painter working in Bermuda. We are please to offer this elegant semi-abstract watercolor showing sailing boats in the calm Caribbean waters off the coastal hills of the Bahamas.
